The Writing is on the Wall

Greetings in the Lord!

Today's word comes from Daniel 5 and is another word about President Assad of Syria. In this story from Daniel 5, we read about King Belshazzar, son of King Nebuchadnezzar, who was having a great banquet one night with his nobles and family.

During the evening of drinking and toasting their gods of gold, silver, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand, a strange and fearful thing happened, a hand appeared and wrote on the wall:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN

Eventually Daniel was summoned to tell the king what the words meant, as none of the king's other wise men could decipher it. So Daniel enlightened the king with its meaning, but first prefaced it by reminding King Belshazzar of what had happened to his father, King Nebuchadnezzar during his reign--the Lord had greatly humbled him because his heart had grown exceedingly proud and calloused.

"Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory....But you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this. Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven....you did not honor the God who holds in His hand your life and all your ways." (Daniel 5:19b-23)

"This is what these words mean:

MENE: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
TEKEL: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
PERES: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians." (Daniel 5:26-28)

And so it is for President Assad, our Belshazzar in the story. Not having learned from the wicked ways of his father before him, he carries on in like fashion, but the Lord will bring it to an end. So it has been decreed--let it be done on earth as it is in heaven.

~Be blessed and be a blessing.
