Judges for Sale, But Not for Much Longer

 Greetings in the Lord~

Well, these past couple of years especially, we are seeing that many judges in the U.S. are for sale, and probably have been for quite some time.  As far back as 30 years ago, I recall being told firsthand by a guy whose job it was to deliver money from the Mexican mafia to Texan judges to look the other way regarding cases about the drug trade down near the southern border.  True or not, I'll never know, but just last Sunday a retired judge from Colorado talked about judges that wouldn't recuse themselves from cases even though they had received "$100,000 cars as gifts" from people involved in cases they presided over.  Absolutely unbelievable!  She also talked about how many judges do not always have legal expertise in the nature of the cases they were assigned to, and often had to get input from other judges who did.  Oh yes, judges need to be experts in evidence and process, but many times end up being overly reliant on attorneys' presentations for their decisions.

Now I'm sure many legal experts will vehemently disagree with my summations, but the obvious still remains: our judicial system is full of blatantly corrupt judges and our nation is reeling from their biased (bought) and politically-charged unjust decisions.  Today's prophetic word from Psalm 82 tells us how God feels about that:

God presides in the great assembly; He renders judgment among the "gods":  "How long will you all defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?  Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.  Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."

"The 'gods' know nothing, they understand nothing.  They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.  I said, 'You are all "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.'  But you will die like mere mortal; you will fall like every other ruler."

Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your inheritance.

In this passage, judges are referred to as "gods," both for how God uses them to execute His justice on earth, and for how corrupt judges think they are 'gods' instead of normal people.  The first thing the psalmist points out is this: all judges should understand that they have a responsibility by God to issue just decrees, and they and their decisions will be examined by God.  Secondly, intentionally issuing unjust decisions will have a profound effect on society--our trust in God's justice will be shaken by these corrupt judges.  It is a serious offense to God to be an unjust judge.

The next thing the psalmist highlights is a simple fact: you will die like any normal person.  Your special position in life does not make you immortal--you will die and have to face God like everyone else....and have to give an account for all your unjust decisions to God.  Yikes!  That is why the psalmist calls them "ignorant"--they don't realize how damaging their unjust decrees will be, nor do they realize how much more God will hold them accountable for their corrupt ways.

This is the spiritual difference between attorneys and judges--it is expected that attorneys will have to represent different sides of a case; the Accuser is expected to accuse the righteous.  But a judge is expected to be an earthly extension of the arm of God, to decree His justice on earth for the glory of His wisdom to be seen and experienced by people.  That is why when the arrogance of a corrupt judge perverts God's justice, it shakes the foundations of society; it hits to the core of a nation and crumbles our trust and assurance that we have of a just and secure nation.  I dare say, of all the crimes to be committed, a corrupt judge may just be the worst offender.  Additionally and inversely, the integrity of the justice system in a nation provides an accurate indication of the health of that society.  That is why we are to pray for our leaders and judges--for we all benefit from their integrity.

So today, I pray that the Lord would remove corrupt judges in the U.S. and bring about a complete overhaul in our judicial system for more transparency and accountability for judges; first, that they have a deeper understanding of their accountability to the Lord, and second, grow to have a deeper understanding of their role in preserving the secureness and health of our society.  I also pray for the protection of godly judges and the deliverance from evil as they preside over cases.  Lastly, we pray that the Lord would sustain our trust in God's justice from the assaults of corrupt judges, and that we would again have fullness of integrity presiding in our courtrooms.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

~Be blessed and be a blessing.
